Gulmarg Travel Guide: Skiing, Gondola Ride Tickets, Best Time to Visit & Attractions

Gulmarg, known historically as the "Meadow of Flowers," is situated at an elevation of 2,650 meters (8,690 feet) in the Pir Panjal Range of the western Himalayas. Renowned as India's premier ski resort and home to one of the world's highest operating cable cars, Gulmarg shifts from a lush alpine wildflower valley in summer to a deep-powder snow paradise in winter.

Must-Visit Tourist Attractions & Activities in Gulmarg

1. Gulmarg Gondola (Asia’s Highest Cable Car)

The Gulmarg Gondola is the centerpiece attraction of the town, ferrying visitors up the slopes of Mount Apharwat:

  • Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori): Ascends from 2,650 meters to 3,050 meters through dense pine and fir forests. Kongdoori features gentle snow slopes, cafes, and snowmobile tracks.

  • Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak): Ascends to a staggering 3,980 meters (over 13,000 feet). This phase delivers views of the Line of Control, Nanga Parbat on clear days, and provides access to advanced ski slopes.

  • Booking Note: Phase 2 tickets often sell out weeks in advance; online advance booking via the official J&K Tourism portal is essential.

2. Skiing & Snowboarding on Apharwat Peak

Gulmarg is internationally celebrated for dry, deep Himalayan powder snow. Between late December and March, the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) operates ski courses, and certified local instructors provide daily gear rentals and training on nursery slopes near the town base.

3. Alpather Lake (The Frozen Lake)

Located at the foot of Apharwat Peak at roughly 4,390 meters, this triangular alpine lake remains frozen or speckled with floating ice until June. It is accessible via a moderate 1.5-hour trek from the Phase 2 Gondola station during warmer months.

4. Maharani Temple & St. Mary’s Church

  • Maharani Temple (Rani Temple): Built in 1915 by the wife of Maharaja Hari Singh, this bright red-roofed Shiva temple sits atop a central knoll, visible from virtually anywhere in the meadow.

  • St. Mary’s Church: A century-old Victorian-style stone church tucked between alpine meadows and pine groves, known for its stained-glass windows and winter postcard views.

5. Drung Waterfall

Located just 15 km before the Gulmarg ascent near Tangmarg, this cascading stream freezes solid during peak winter (January to February), forming giant icicle stalactites and frozen rock curtains.
